Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari on closure of controversial Sars police unit
Nigeria’s government has dissolved an infamous police unit plagued with allegations of extrajudicial killings and abuse after days of protests against police brutality.
A wave of outrage had been fuelled over the last week by the emergence online of graphic footage and shared experiences of abuses by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, commonly called Sars.
'The disbands of Sars is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reform in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives and livliehoods of our people,' the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, said.
